Mankato is the larger of the two principal cities of the Mankato-North Mankato metropolitan area that covers Blue Earth and Nicollet counties and had a combined population of 94,149 at the 2010 census. In 2010, the population of Mankato was 39,309.
Mankato, in Blue Earth County, was first noted on maps in 1850, and settled 1852. Due to four railroad lines meeting in Mankato, the early settlement quickly grew to 5,500 people by 1880 as the city grew into a major Minnesota hub. The city organized and separated from Mankato Township in 1868.
